WordPress Performance Optimization: From 40 to 98 on PageSpeed

Most WordPress sites score 40–60 on PageSpeed. With the right interventions, 90+ is achievable for most sites. Here's the exact playbook we use.

Step 1: Baseline and Audit

Start with PageSpeed Insights and Chrome DevTools. Identify your three biggest opportunities — usually: render-blocking resources, oversized images, and a slow server response time. Fix these three before touching anything else.

Step 2: Hosting

No amount of optimisation compensates for bad hosting. If your server TTFB (Time to First Byte) is over 600ms, upgrade your hosting first. We use SiteGround Business or Cloudways (DigitalOcean) for client sites. Both deliver consistent TTFB under 200ms.

Step 3: Caching

Install WP Rocket (paid, worth every rupee) or W3 Total Cache (free). Enable: page caching, browser caching, GZIP compression, and database query caching. WP Rocket's settings are sensible out of the box — don't over-configure.

Step 4: Image Optimisation

Images are the single largest opportunity on most WordPress sites. Use Imagify or ShortPixel to auto-compress all uploads. Convert images to WebP — modern browsers support it and file sizes are 25–34% smaller than JPEG. Enable lazy loading (WordPress core has this built in since 5.5).

Step 5: Critical CSS

Remove render-blocking CSS by inlining critical above-the-fold styles and deferring the rest. WP Rocket's "Load CSS asynchronously" does this automatically. Manually verify the above-the-fold experience hasn't broken — sometimes critical CSS generation misses elements.

Step 6: JavaScript Optimisation

Defer non-critical JavaScript. Remove unused plugins — each active plugin loads JS on every page regardless of whether that page uses it. Audit with Query Monitor (free plugin) to see exactly what's loading.

Following this process: Client A (property agency): 38 → 94. Client B (eCommerce): 45 → 89. Client C (blog): 52 → 98. The biggest gains always come from hosting + caching + images. The advanced techniques get you the final 10 points.
